- On naming things: A linen shirt called RAIN

My mom passed away in 2008 ... the same year that my daughters Meg and Meliss got married ... so much happiness and sadness ... beyond words to tell.

I went to Shelter Island that summer to help my dad go through Mom's clothes and crafting supplies ... this linen top is one of the things I brought home (also her quilting pins, which sit on the table next to my coffee cup in this post).

I wore it often, and the hem began to fray.

The facings were loose from the get go ...

As I stitched them down, I found myself humming the Jimmy Davis song "It's only rain" ...

and so it became "RAIN" ...

N.B. Giving credit where credit is due: the idea of naming and labeling Boro-style clothing came from Jude Hill.

    1. The initial stitching along the right side was very tight (and my fingers were very sore) ... as I worked, the stitches got looser (and my fingers got happier), especially when I realized the right side lines of stitching could be discontinuous, like streaks of rain on a screen.

    1. I actually started to wear it when it was still in progress ... I could 't wait. In fact, I'm still adding stitches here and there. Ha!
