September 21 is the International Day of Peace
and this marks the second year I have the privilege of joining with two Australian artists in sending
pieces of peace out into the world ...
As I considered how best to participate this time around, teachers
became the focus of my intention ...
It was a challenge with so many
teachers who have been, and remain, a part of my life. In the end I decided to choose
two new teachers, two art teachers, two writing teachers, and the one person
who, more than any other, inspired my own journey into teaching.
To each of them I am sending …
- a repurposed silver-plate peace tag made
by Barry Smith
http://rustnstuff.blogspot.com/2018/07/process-of-pieces-for-peace.html - a letterpress peace weather-gram
made by Fiona Dempster
https://paperponderings.blogspot.com/2018/07/printing-for-peace.html - and two teach
peace pins stitched on shreds of repurposed linen clothing,
one to keep and one to give away
In the spirit of Tibetan prayer flags, any or all of these pieces of peace may be placed outside. According to Wikipedia, '"prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion,
strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to gods, which is a
common misconception; rather, the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras
will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion ... to all"
And for those of you who recall last year's Peace Pin Project, there is more to come.
such a beautiful post for peace!
ReplyDeleteMo - thank you ... Barry and Fiona are inspiring in so many ways
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful. You are inspiring.
ReplyDeleteAnd being around you does inspire a sense of peace.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is so wonderful! I love each piece (peace haha) Did I ever tell you that your "Imagine Peace" pin rides with me in my car, hanging from the rear view mirror. I look at it and think of you and your skills and peace and all of the good people in this community and it fills me. xo
ReplyDeleteOoops...and I also meant to say that my gorgeous leaf is on my counter of Important Things from special people. :)
ReplyDeleteConnie - thank you ... I’m a great believer in the concept of “pay it forward”
ReplyDeletePam - and now I’m wondering if our collaborative project could be a prayer flag ...
Nancy - you have told me before, but I love knowing your peace pin rides with you ... so please feel free to tell me again and again (good stories deserve retelling!). And I love the phrase “counter of important things from special people” ... makes me want to gather everything into one place, but for now they peek out from wherever I wander
Liz, I think of you as an Ambassador of Peace. In the gifts you have shared, in stitch, words and spirit.
ReplyDeleteWhat an absolutely beautiful tribute to peace Liz - the ongoing sharing of wee thoughts and gifts helps keep the hope for peace alive...
ReplyDeleteHazel - humble thanks ... I hope I can live up to the title
ReplyDeleteFiona - I love being a part of paying forward the thought-full gifts of your hands ... thank you for the opportunity
