Maybe, maybe not

I've continued to make wonky log cabin squares out of P's outgrown baby clothes ...

And at first I was psyched that there were so many examples of wonky log cabin quilts, examples of which I collected from Pinterest ...

Except, then I realized it was sort of unoriginal. So I started playing around with two squares ...

turning an idea over in my mind: wondering if the wonky log cabins could become wonky herringbones instead ...

And the answer was, hmmm, well maybe ...

moving piece by piece ...

like giant cloth tangram shapes ...

Of course, those of you who are more experienced are most likely shaking your heads over all those seams and bias ends hanging over the edges. So yeah, after one abortive attempt at finishing, I'm still working on a solution ...

But for now, those log cabin squares are starting to look better and better.

  1. Thanks much … and those sidebars are still up and running at the old blog site. I visit there daily to see which Kindred Spirits have written new posts.

love the new look here! and as a wp user, commenting will be easier than before.

I love the relationship of the black design feature of the rug to your wonky squares. I don’t need to tell you how I feel about ‘perfect’!

  1. Thanks Dee … your blog inspired me to make the move and your support for doing so has been much appreciated.

And yeah, my rug is my “design wall” … it’s a soumak we bought back in Virginia and I love its less-than-perfect design elements. Likewise, after years of chasing perfection in stitch, I’ve come to the conclusion that perfection is definitely over-rated. The corollary to that being: wonky is wonderful.

It's about time (from WordPress)

Here's a long-overdue look at the assemblage Don made last summer for our friends in Colorado ...

Entitled The Lewis Expedition, for Pam and Wade's last name ...

it depicts their journey from Williamsburg, Virginia ...

to Glenwood Springs, Colorado ...

with a major stop along the way for the Outer Banks of North Carolina ...

There are details upon details that I simply love, but the coolest thing was finding out that this imagined mountain ...

bore a resemblance to the double peak of Mount Sopris, which is visible from the Lewis's home ...

where The Lewis Expedition now resides.

Here and there (revised)

December 17, 2024

Since I'm annoyed with WordPress, I'm going to try to move everything written there back onto Blogger ... albeit slowly since there are five years worth of posts to deal with.

The long-term plan after moving all the posts (of which there are over 500), will be to revert the WordPress site to a free-to-me site which I'll only use for creating posts on my iPhone.

So, we'll see how it goes.

Meantime, here's the original Blogger post back in 2019 ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After ten years on the Blogger platform, I have moved over to WordPress ...

imgoingtotexas.home.blog

However, the original blog will remain here for as long as Blogger continues to support it. Which means those of you who enjoy the Kindred Spirits links in the right sidebar can still come here to see what's new ... with the added bonus that the new blog, titled I'm Going to Texas (version 2.0), will also float to the top of the sidebar whenever there's a new post. Hope to see you there!

And here's the original WordPress post on the same day.

Starting over

Here I go again ... ten years after moving to the Hill Country and beginning I'm Going to Texas, I'm starting a new blog on WordPress.

Since I'm trying out the mobile app as I write this, here's a picture of some slow stitching in progress ...

Okay, seems pretty good so far.

I'll probably add bells and whistles along the way, but I'm keeping it simple for now.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.

The beginning of the end for Blogger?

I've already written this post once, but my mobile version of Blogger on my old iPhone 5s wouldn't publish it. So, back to publishing on the laptop ... for as long as that lasts. And ugh ... I hate formatting on the PC ... the mobile app was soooo much easier.

Anyway, in addition to the gift pot Deb Sposa sent, there was this beautiful bit of handwoven cloth ...

Here's the back story in Deb's words:
"I found it at an estate sale at a gorgeous mountain home where the owners had collected amazing Southwestern flavored artworks including fiber pieces & western antiques.  Not sure how old it is but I'm guessing at least 50 to 75 years old.  The weave style looked Mexican or possibly Native American and I think it was used as a small book cover.  I hope you will be able to find a use for it.  Possibly bind your own book to put inside ..."
Well that answered the question I had about the sewn-under ends ...

And got me thinking how best to showcase it ...

I liked the idea of a book, so I played with the idea of making pages out of used tea bags ...

And then, recalling our trek to northern New Mexico last summer, I hit on the perfect idea: the petroglyphs that we saw in Santa Fe ...

So now I'm playing with watercolors and gouache, trying to find the perfect combination ...

As Rachel Maddow is wont to say, "Watch this space ... "

Joy-full

I have been too long away. With too many things rattling around in my head, I ended up putting none of it down.

But today's mail call gave me the nudge I needed to get back in gear. A whimsical box ...

holding treasure: tapestry, handspun, and a cunning little vessel ...

Look closely and you'll read Deb Sposa's name scribed into the foot ...

It's a wonderful keepsake from someone I very much admire. And if you don't already do so, please read Deb's blog to see why

And so, finally finding myself online again, I figured I might as well give you a peek at my recent patchplay ...

wonky improvs on the traditional log cabin design made from P's outgrown baby clothes.

Some of the clothing was so sheer that I decided to piece strips together ...

before cutting them into perpendicular strips to provide a little more stability ...

I interspersed the pieced strips with brand new, solid cotton quilting cloth (gasp). That was a first for me as I usually work with thrift store linen clothing, but P's clothes were all cotton and I sensed the need for a consistent fiber content and weight to stabilize the eventual whole.

Besides which, there was no way those tiny baby clothes were going to stretch far enough for another first: a "true" quilt. By which I mean a pieced top and a backing with a third layer sandwiched in the middle, all stitched together into a bed covering of some sort. Something I've never done before. To which end I purchased a double weave cotton gauze to use in place of batting ...

Because I've never followed recipes exactly, so why start now?
